German Shepherd Husky Mix

The German shepherd husky mix or shepsky is an example of a hybrid breed that originated in the late 1990s. However, they existed before this in nature as both the parent species existed for ages.

The German shepherd husky mix is a black, medium sable, tan, or cream dog that makes excellent pets if properly socialized and trained. These dogs are loyal, friendly, affectionate, and protective.

Shepsky - German Shepherd Husky Mix

The German shepherd husky mix is more petite than a German shepherd, usually 20 to 25 inches tall, and weighs around 45 to 80 pounds. These dogs are graceful, extraordinarily speedy, and athletic.

The ears of these dogs are firmly erect, extending in front of the cheek line, and the ears are more triangular and smaller than an average German shepherd.

They are compactly inbuilt with medium to short thick fur and a brushtail carried over the back. Their heads are medium with a moderately square muzzle and slightly round face. The breed usually has distinct brown, amber, blue, or green eyes with probable heterochromia.

The sheepskins are loyal and affectionate, playful and friendly. They tend to be highly vocal with increased energy levels and possess stubborn and dominant personalities. With a high prey drive, these mixed breed dogs are effective watchdogs.

These dogs are difficult to pet in most apartments and condos due to their large size, and small spaces tend to make them more anxious, for they are very intense, energetic, and need exercises.

the size of shepsky

A mix of a Siberian Husky and German Shepherd, also known as Gerberian Shepsky, are likely to live for 10 to 13 years. However, they might have a few health issues like elbow and hip dysplasia, eye problems, Endocrine problems, and bloating.

All German Shepherd Husky Mix tend to shed twice a year, more than usual. Although you should brush your dog twice a week, it is all the more necessary during their shedding time.

Their outer coats are water and wind-resistant, while the underfur is insulating, so they are well adapted to hot and cold weather. With proper consultation from a veterinarian, these dogs can be bathed using mild and moisturizing cleansers.

Make sure to trim the mix’s nails every six to eight weeks to prevent cracking, splitting, and fracturing. You should consult professionals for oral hygiene to protect them from bad breath, tartar, and mouth bacteria buildups.

A healthy and active German Shepherd and Husky mix should consume 1700 to 2400 calories per day. To avoid bloating, feeding them twice a day and thrice a day with lesser portions is even better for them. However, overfeeding them can cause joint problems and other health conditions.

These dogs need at least two hours of exercise every day, including mental activities and high-intensity exertion. They should be engaged in strenuous exercises and intellectual stimulation for increased agility. This particular mix does police work very well, especially when it comes to drug and bomb-sniffing.

These mixed dogs, as expected, possess traits from both German Shepherds and Siberian Huskies, making them the ultimate watchdog.

The Shepsky is a great companion for children if trained and exposed to kids as a puppy. Some say that the Shepsky is protective of the children in their family with the attitude of a babysitter!
